Providing Special Lectures at Elementary and Secondary Schools
The Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Project Group at Pukyong National University (Director Kim Chang-kyung, Professor of Chinese Studies) held a lecture event on "Maritime Humanities" to cultivate marine sensitivity among youth.
In celebration of May, Pukyong National University announced on the 13th that it will visit Haegang Middle School, Cheongdong Elementary School, and Bunpo Elementary School near the university to provide special lectures as part of the "2024 Youth Maritime Humanities Lecture."
This lecture series has been held annually since 2017 for elementary and middle school students in the Busan area to foster a humanities-based understanding, imagination, and creativity related to the sea, which is a regional characteristic.
On the 1st, the project group visited Haegang Middle School and conducted lectures under the theme "The Meeting of Marine Environment and Maritime Humanities," including △ Escape from Crisis of Marine Animals (Lecturer Park Su-hyun) △ Reality and Recycling of Marine Waste and Discarded Fishing Gear (Lecturer Go Dong-hoon) △ Marine Thermal Pollution and Destruction of Marine Ecosystems (Lecturer Lee Jae-min).
Then, on the 7th, they visited Cheongdong Elementary School and gave lectures on the theme "Marine Tourism and a Humanities Perspective," including △ Experiencing and Enjoying Marine Tourism (Lecturer Yoo Hyung-sook) △ The Nakdong River Estuary and Ecotourism Stories (Lecturer Park Sung-bae) △ Beautiful Uninhabited Islands of Korea Seen by Drone (Lecturer Jang Sun-woong) △ Marine Cultural Tourism in Qingdao, China (Lecturer Oh Hye-jung).
Additionally, every Friday in May, they will visit Bunpo Elementary School to provide lectures under the theme "Fantasy Retrieved from the Humanities Sea," delivered by children's literature writers from the Busan Children's Literature Association, including △ Poseidon, the God of the Sea (Lecturer Kim Ha-young) △ Female Warrior 'Moana' in Sea Movies (Lecturer Park Mi-ra) △ Mermaid Stories in Old Tales (Lecturer Lee Sang-mi).
Research Professor Gong Mi-hee, who is in charge of this project, said, "For seven years, lecturers have visited schools directly every year with different themes for elementary, middle, and high school students in the Busan area, presenting humanities content that is difficult to access in daily life. We feel rewarded that students have developed marine sensitivity that allows them to enjoy the sea on their own."
The Pukyong National University HK+ Project Group has developed various programs combining the sea and humanities, such as "Youth Maritime Humanities," "Northeast Asian Maritime Humanities Network International Conference," "Pukyong Maritime Humanities College," "Pukyong Humanities One-day Special Lectures," and "Maritime Content Contest," which are provided free of charge to local residents.
