Hyun Woo-jin (37), a member of Megastudy who has long held the position of 'Ilta Gangsa (top popular instructor)' in mathematics, expressed belated bewilderment over the tax audit he underwent last year by the National Tax Service.

On the 12th, appearing on the 'Pisik Show' segment of the YouTube channel 'Pisik University,' Hyun said about the tax audit last year, "It was a really massive tax audit. Usually, individuals are not investigated. I am neither a company nor a corporation, but they just came to conduct the audit," expressing his frustration, adding, "I pay my taxes well. About 60% of my income goes to taxes." Hyun is estimated to earn over 20 billion KRW annually. Assuming a 20 billion KRW salary, it means he pays about 12 billion KRW in taxes.
Hyun speculated that the reason he was audited was because he criticized the college entrance exam policy. Previously, since the September mock test for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) last year, he had consistently criticized the exclusion of ultra-difficult questions known as 'killer questions.' He explained the situation at the time, saying, "I once said something, and in the June mock test, my point was that '(because of the killer questions) students would be confused.' This was because no clear guidance was given." He continued, "But since students have to follow instructions no matter what, I felt sorry for those who had to go through this process. I guess I have quite an influence. I just said one sentence, and it went viral."

Hyun criticized, "During the tax audit, I got a call at the office saying the tax audit team had arrived. So I told them to look at everything. I had nothing to hide." He added, "They even took my computer, but they didn’t seem to know what they were doing. It felt unprepared and hastily conducted."
Questions about his private life also poured in. When asked by the host if he had a girlfriend, Hyun replied, "That’s just my private life, so I can’t answer." He added, "There might be someone, but that person’s privacy should also be respected." Hyun also claimed that he has a stalker following him. He said, "The stalker even comes to my house," adding, "They come saying they have an appointment with me, but I never let anyone into my home." He further mentioned, "So far, about six people have come. They are all adults."

Earlier, in June last year, the National Tax Service conducted tax audits without prior notice on major well-known academies in Seoul such as Megastudy, Sidae Injae, Jongno Academy, and Uway. The National Tax Service also investigated famous instructors known to earn hundreds of billions of KRW in annual salaries for allegedly underreporting income from textbook fees and special lecture fees to reduce their tax payments.
Meanwhile, Hyun graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Stanford University in the United States and entered the academy district in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul in 2010. He is currently called the 'Ilta Gangsa' for CSAT mathematics lectures. As of last year, he recorded the highest number of online students across both humanities and sciences. Hyun Woo-jin’s annual salary is estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of KRW.
