Accident Occurs Offshore in Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung
Sailor Who Jumped into Sea to Rescue Also Suffers Hypothermia
A male passenger in his 60s who was enjoying a cruise tour along the east coast of Gangwon drowned and died.
According to Yonhap News on the 12th, at around 2:31 p.m. that day, passenger A (65) fell into the sea from a cruise ship passing near Sacheonjin-ri, Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung City. A witness who saw the accident testified that A fell from the first-floor railing on the left side of the cruise ship. When A fell, two crew members in their 40s, including crew member B, jumped into the sea to rescue him. A was rescued by the coast guard and transported to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but eventually died. Crew member B showed symptoms of hypothermia and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. B is reported to be in stable condition.
The cruise ship where the accident occurred had departed from Jumunjin Port around 2 p.m. that day and was passing through the Sacheon sea area.
The coast guard and fire authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident based on witness statements and other evidence.
