On the 9th, the animal protection organization LCKD posted a photo on their Instagram account of a stray dog named Mochi, found along with a letter and belongings at a public parking lot near Tancheon in Taepyeong-dong, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province. Mochi is a female mixed-breed dog born in 2017. In the photos released, she was tied to a guardrail inside the parking lot, with a soft cushion, food, and snacks placed beside her. It appears that a muzzle had been on her but was removed or fell off after being abandoned there.
The four-page letter found with Mochi expressed the owner's love and concern. Owner A began, "First, I wish peace always dwells in the home of whoever reads this letter." He continued, "I still vividly remember the day I first brought her home, how soft and pretty she was, and how we happily named her with the kids." He shared, "Five years ago, I lost my family in a traffic accident and was left alone in an instant. Life was so hard that I wanted to give up, but I endured by looking at Mochi who only looked at me." He added, "She was the only joy and happiness in my hellish life after losing my family."
He had vowed, "I will hold and protect her until the end, for the family I lost," but he could not keep that promise. A revealed, "I have terminal stomach cancer, and the cancer cells have already spread to other parts. I was given a limited time to live. They said I will have to leave before this little one." He explained, "I am not afraid to go to my family, but I worry about Mochi being left alone. For months, I searched everywhere for someone who could take care of her, but no one was found." He pleaded, "I leave her here with a desperate hope that she will meet a new family and live happily, not starve waiting for me in a house without me. Please take Mochi in. Save her."
"Dear Mochi, you must live" Final letter... Protection group hopes Mochi can escape euthanasia shelter and see the world
A apologized, "I am sorry for being a poor family who could not take responsibility until the end," and asked, "Please embrace Mochi so she can live peacefully and happily." He also detailed Mochi’s health condition, medical history, allergies, personality, and favorite foods. On the last page, he left a brief letter to Mochi: "Dear Mochi, you must live, you absolutely must live. Be obedient. Live loved, healthy, and happy, okay? I love you, my daughter," conveying his heartfelt emotions.
The organization stated, "The dog admitted to the shelter is not opening her heart due to the changed environment and separation from her family until the notice period ends, so we cannot even guess what choice awaits her. It is heartbreaking that she must part from the owner who was her whole world and now must survive euthanasia." They added, "Our shelter in Si has limited space, so we do not know how much time she will have, but we earnestly hope she will live and come out into the world." Mochi’s notice period ended on the 9th.
The post received over 11,000 likes on Instagram alone and was shared widely across various online communities. Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "I cannot even imagine what the owner must have been thinking or feeling," "I hope Mochi finds a good family," "Every word seems filled with love and concern for the dog," and "The owner’s story is so heartbreaking."
