On the 9th, Asan City in Chungnam announced that it released 35 pairs, totaling 70 individuals, of the endangered wild species level II, the water scorpion, into the wetland of Donghwa-ri, Songak-myeon.
Asan City, the Geumgang River Basin Environmental Office, Samsung Display Co., Ltd., the Holocene Ecological Conservation Research Institute, and Donghwa-ri signed a joint agreement in July 2022 to successfully promote the water scorpion restoration project in the Asan area, in accordance with the Ministry of Environment's "Comprehensive Plan for the Conservation of Endangered Wild Species."
This release of water scorpions is the third, following those in September 2022 and June 2023. The Holocene Ecological Conservation Research Institute, responsible for habitat protection and monitoring, reported that a significant number of the released water scorpions have now completed overwintering and have spawned.
Mayor Park Kyung-gwi stated, "Rapid industrialization and urban development are destroying many wildlife habitats," adding, "The cooperation among the public, government, and businesses in Asan City to protect endangered species is very meaningful."
