This is the first official visit to KAIST by the owner of Formosa Plastics Group. The cooperation between KAIST and Formosa Plastics Group began in March. At that time, KAIST signed a comprehensive exchange and cooperation agreement with Myongji University of Science and Technology, Chang Gung University, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, which were established and supported by Formosa Plastics Group.

Chairperson Sandy Wang’s visit was made to concretize the exchange and cooperation between KAIST and Formosa Plastics Group. First, Chairperson Sandy Wang will give a leadership special lecture on the topics of her father Wang Yung-ching’s (王永慶) approach to child education and corporate social contribution and practice, as part of the educational lecture program “Maeseweol Seoyeon (Executive Education Lecture)” for KAIST executives.

Following this, she plans to observe KAIST’s research technologies related to Taiwan’s future industries such as advanced bio and eco-friendly energy, and discuss global industry-academia cooperation plans.

Both institutions will also explore appointing joint adjunct professors to promote global cooperation such as joint student supervision and research.

Additionally, they plan to attract investment and cooperation from Formosa Plastics Group targeting KAIST’s outstanding venture companies related to bio and eco-friendly energy, laying the foundation for innovative industrial cooperation between Korea and Taiwan.

KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung said, “Formosa Plastics Group is a company with a global network and will be a very important partner for KAIST’s bio and engineering technologies to expand worldwide. We expect that Chairperson Sandy Wang’s visit will serve as an opportunity to maintain close cooperative relations with Taiwan.”

Meanwhile, Formosa Plastics Group was founded by Chairperson Sandy Wang’s late father Wang Yung-ching, leading Taiwan’s core industries including plastic PVC production (world’s number one), semiconductors, steel, heavy industries, bio, and batteries.

Wang Yung-ching was respected by the Taiwanese people for his belief that the companies and wealth he built belong to the “people,” setting an example by returning his wealth to society. Chang Gung University, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Myongji University of Science and Technology, which are collaborating with KAIST, were also established as part of Wang Yung-ching’s social contribution efforts and receive financial support from Formosa Plastics Group.
