UNDRR-led 'MCR2030' Membership
Promotion of 'International Safe City' Certification
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is embarking on creating a city resilient to climate change and disasters.
On the 9th, Yongin City announced that it recently officially joined and began activities in the 'Making Cities Resilient Campaign (MCR) 2030' led by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
'MCR 2030' is a movement to build a global partnership aimed at strengthening local resilience against various disasters. It follows the achievements of the MCR campaign conducted by UNDRR from 2010 to 2020, with the goal of enhancing disaster resilience in each city.
MCR 2030 urges cities themselves to become by 2030 ▲inclusive, ▲safe (from climate change and disasters), ▲resilient, and ▲sustainable. It also presents 10 tasks for local governments to strengthen disaster resilience on their own, including securing finances, enhancing infrastructure resilience, and strengthening institutional and social capacities.
The campaign is also an action plan where member cities build networks that provide technical and educational support by continent and aim to improve resilience through collaboration.
Earlier, to participate in the campaign, Yongin City visited the UNDRR Northeast Asia Office in Songdo, Incheon, in March to discuss participation plans, and last month introduced the city’s safety policies and safety culture activities at the MCR 2030 briefing held in Seoul. Next month, UNDRR officials are scheduled to visit the city to attend the launch ceremony of the Citizen Safety Guardians.
The city plans to further strengthen its status as an international safe city by pursuing UN certification as an 'International Safe City (Resilience Hub - disaster resilience focused city).' Currently, among major domestic cities, only Ulsan and Incheon have received this international safe city certification.
Meanwhile, since the launch of the 8th local government, Yongin City has received the Presidential Citation for two consecutive years in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s disaster management evaluation and was also selected as a 'Safe City in Korea' in the '2023 Regional Safety Index' evaluation.
A Yongin City official said, "We will share Yongin City’s safety policies and activities with major cities worldwide through various international activities and strengthen our status as an international safe city."
