Yeongdeungpo-gu Conducts Major Drain Cleaning with Eco-Friendly Street Sweepers and Dredging Vehicles Choi Ho-gwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District (left), is cleaning the streets last year using the eco-friendly street sweeper Glutton.

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will conduct a "Storm Drain Deep Cleaning" using eco-friendly street sweepers and dredging vehicles to proactively prevent flood damage and create a pleasant urban environment.

At 9 a.m. on the 11th, Mayor Choi Ho-kwon, district executives, and members of local volunteer organizations will carry out the "Storm Drain Deep Cleaning" in the Mullae-dong area. This cleaning event is part of the May activities of the "Volunteer Day," where Mayor Choi and district employees practice sharing with neighbors and the local community once a month.

Storm drains clogged with various trash and sediment have been identified as a major cause of urban flooding. Water cannot flow smoothly into the sewage pipes due to storm drains filled with garbage, cigarette butts, and other debris. In preparation for the upcoming summer monsoon season, the district aims to prevent flood damage caused by typhoons and sudden heavy rains through storm drain cleaning.

On this day, to ensure effective storm drain cleaning, the district will utilize an "eco-friendly street sweeper (Glutton)" and a "storm drain dedicated suction dredging vehicle." Using these powerful suction machines makes it easy to remove cigarette butts, fine dust, glass shards, and other debris accumulated inside the storm drains. Compared to the traditional method of manually opening storm drain covers and sweeping with brooms, this approach is more efficient and significantly reduces labor intensity. It can also reach cleaning blind spots, helping to create cleaner streets.

The district expects that this "Volunteer Day" storm drain cleaning will help not only reduce flood risks during heavy rain but also prevent foul odors, contributing to a pleasant residential environment.

Meanwhile, the district is making every effort to prevent flood damage by installing continuous storm drains, pruning street trees, placing portable water barriers, and installing backflow preventers. As a result, flood damage cases decreased by 96.5% in 2023 compared to 2022.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, "Cleaning storm drains is fundamental to protecting residents' safety, and we will continuously manage them to ensure they function properly during rain. Since record-breaking heavy rains are expected this summer due to abnormal weather, we will take thorough flood prevention measures to ensure a safe summer for our residents."
