Choo Mi-ae Announces Candidacy for National Assembly Speaker Election... "Restoring the Collapsed Livelihood Economy"

Lee Jae-myung Credit Amnesty Dispositional Legal Support

Choo Mi-ae, the elected member of the Democratic Party of Korea, declared her candidacy for the Speaker of the 22nd National Assembly's first half on the 8th, stating, "I will create a 'reform parliament' that follows the will of the people and revive people's livelihoods."

On the same day, Choo held a press conference at the National Assembly and said, "The people's mandate is to restore the broken democracy, resolve the collapsed livelihood economy, and achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula in crisis."

She said, "I will promote swift livelihood legislation to recover the broken livelihood economy," adding, "Legislation related to the people's future food sources and livelihoods cannot be a subject of political strife, and there can be no distinction between ruling and opposition parties." She also said, "I will support dispositional legislation such as the credit pardon proposed by Representative Lee Jae-myung." She hinted at activating a Speaker-direct 'Permanent Task Force (TF) for Livelihood Economy Bills' to promptly process livelihood economy bills so they can be implemented in a timely manner.

She also said, "The National Assembly must normalize diplomacy and peace destroyed by the Yoon Seok-yeol government," and added, "As the ruling party leader, based on my experience and achievements meeting with Nancy Pelosi, President Xi Jinping, and Russian State Duma Chairman Volodin for the Four Powers diplomacy and the successful hosting of the PyeongChang Olympics, the National Assembly will take the lead in restoring the damaged diplomacy."

She also mentioned the restoration of broken democracy. Choo said, "The prosecutorial dictatorship government, which is driving the whole country into an atmosphere of fear with raids and mass indictments, is even suppressing critical voices such as media control," emphasizing, "The National Assembly, the flower of democracy and the last bastion, must take the lead in protecting democracy. That is why a reform Speaker is absolutely necessary."

She also clarified the conflict between Choo and Yoon during her time as Minister of Justice. She said, "The Choo-Yoon conflict frame is merely created by the prosecutorial coup forces of Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol," adding, "While conservative media and conservative camps were engrossed in making Yoon Seok-yeol a 'hero,' as Minister of Justice, I fought to the end to uncover and discipline allegations of corruption related to Prosecutor General Yoon himself and his family."

She continued, "There was a ruling in the first trial that the disciplinary action against the Prosecutor General was lawful, and it is said that 'Choo Mi-ae was right.' Now, two years into the Yoon Seok-yeol government, the truths of the prosecutorial coup, such as the 'Channel A media collusion,' Kim Kun-hee's stock manipulation, and the allegations of electioneering, are being confirmed one after another," she pointed out.

Choo presented specific pledges including △ swift processing of reform and livelihood legislation such as prosecution and media reform △ restriction on the exercise of veto power related to the President, their family, and close associates △ establishment of budget formulation authority for the National Assembly △ introduction of the people's initiative system △ basic rights for future generations for 'climate justice' △ delegation of the power of no confidence in the Speaker to the party and party members.

Choo said, "If I become the Speaker of the National Assembly, I will create an innovative and reforming parliament together with my fellow lawmakers," adding, "I will fulfill the mission of making the Republic of Korea proud again by honoring the public sentiment sent in the 22nd general election."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party completed candidate registration on the same day and will hold the Speaker candidate primary election on the 16th. If no candidate receives a majority in the first round of voting, a runoff vote will be held between the top two candidates. The candidate who wins the Democratic Party primary will be elected if they receive the approval of the majority of the total members in a secret ballot at the National Assembly plenary session.
