Ministry of Industry Announces Measures to Enhance Energy Efficiency and Safety of Aging Apartments
The government has decided to provide a package support for the replacement of electricity and heating/cooling facilities and the promotion of renewable energy in apartments that are over 20 years old and deteriorated. Priority will be given to complexes that invest long-term repair reserves in energy efficiency and safety.
On the 8th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a 'Green Home Package Support Council Kickoff Meeting' chaired by Lee Ho-hyun, Director of the Energy Policy Office, with the participation of energy suppliers, the Korea Energy Agency, and the Energy Foundation.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, "As the number of aged houses over 20 years old has surpassed 10 million units and housing deterioration is rapidly progressing, power outages and fire accidents caused by electrical equipment failures have been continuous. Also, with the expansion of types and functions of home appliances and the increase in the use of large-capacity devices, household electricity demand is expected to continue to rise, so we have prepared this Green Home Package support plan."
The ministry will identify 200 aged apartment complexes urgently needing energy efficiency improvements and safety management, and provide package support by combining various multi-family housing support projects currently carried out by each institution, such as replacement of electrical and heating/cooling common facilities and the promotion of renewable energy. The support targets will be selected considering the degree of aging and history of power outages among complexes using long-term repair reserves for replacing aged transformers and repairing/construction of heating facilities. In addition, for vulnerable households within the complexes, support will be linked to improving heating/cooling efficiency and distributing LEDs.
Director Lee said, "Through organic cooperation among institutions, please strive to ensure that the Green Home Package achieves the goals set for this year and develops into a representative support program for enhancing the efficiency and safety of aged apartments. We will continue to discover and expand support policies for energy efficiency improvements and safety management not only for non-residential buildings but also for residential buildings."
