President Yoon Suk-yeol is set to hold a press conference marking his 2nd anniversary in office, drawing attention to what stance he will take on sensitive national issues such as the special prosecutor law involving Chae Sang-byeong and the controversy over First Lady Kim Geon-hee's luxury handbag. This press conference will be the first in 1 year and 9 months since the 100-day press conference in August 2022.

On the 8th, Choi Jae-sung, former senior secretary for political affairs at the Blue House, appeared on KBS Radio’s ‘Jeon Jong-cheol’s Jeonggyeok Sisa’ and identified “the president and the first lady” as the main points to watch in President Yoon’s press conference.

Choi said, “If reporters are allowed to ask questions freely, they will likely ask about difficult or very sensitive issues that have become contentious,” adding, “I think those questions will mainly focus on the president and the first lady.”

He evaluated, “Whether he faces criticism or backlash, these are issues that need to be explained and confronted little by little beforehand, but this time they are all coming together at once, so from my perspective, it’s a situation where he cannot avoid addressing them,” and “Because the press conference itself is a situation President Yoon cannot avoid, overall it is structured in a way that he will inevitably lose ground.”

On the same program, Kim Hee-jung, the People Power Party’s newly elected representative for Yeonje District, Busan in the 22nd general election, said, “I think the president will deliver a hopeful message that opens a breakthrough for communication with the National Assembly, more proactively than what has been said so far.”

Kim added, “However, do the people really want to hear only about daily politics and special prosecutors?” and “Even during the election, the public wanted to talk about livelihood issues directly related to their lives, such as high bank interest rates and soaring prices,” pointing out, “Even now, the conflict with doctors is something both ruling and opposition parties want resolved as quickly as possible.”

When asked by the host whether President Yoon’s communication style or a sincere apology might be included, Kim responded, “It seems that the public expects him to show a posture of yielding to the people.”
