Gangnam District Mayor Joseongmyeong Inspects Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority for New Strategic Hub Development Bok Jin-kyung, Chairperson of the Administrative and Finance Committee of Gangnam District Council (4th from left), Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam District (3rd from left), Yoon Seok-min, Gangnam District Council Member (2nd from left), and Lee Ho-hyun, Director of Administration of Gangnam District (1st from left), listening to the explanation from Ong Lei Hua (1st from right), Head of Urban Design at the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore.

Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) formed a district delegation led by the Gangnam District Mayor to establish new strategic hubs for the 8th term of the elected government, including the Complex Administrative and Cultural Town, and visited the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore on the 6th.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore is an agency under the Ministry of National Development that establishes urban planning and implements related policies. The delegation met with Ong Lay Hua, the Chief Urban Designer, and Eric Tan, the Senior Architect, to receive explanations about the URA’s role and urban planning system, followed by a Q&A session.

Singapore has promoted new industry policies such as knowledge and finance and aimed to become a global financial hub by organizing the city into 32 land use zones in 1997 and introducing the White Zone system. The White Zone allows developers to creatively and freely develop areas by combining two or more uses such as residential, office, shopping, and hotel within the permitted total density.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “Singapore has restructured and developed urban functions through successful mixed-use developments,” and added, “We will benchmark successful mixed-use development projects that can be applied to Gangnam, where large-scale development projects are currently underway.”
