A Chinese man who lost consciousness due to a heart attack and remained in a vegetative state for 10 years miraculously woke up thanks to his wife's devoted care.

On the 6th (local time), the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported the story of Sun Hongxia from Anhui Province in eastern China, who took care of her husband who suddenly lost consciousness due to a heart attack in 2014. For the past 10 years, Sun has unwaveringly cared for her husband in a vegetative state with love. She said, "It took effort and patience to care for my husband," adding, "My two children inspired me to stay strong and not lose heart. I wanted to be a good example for them."

Sun's husband miraculously opened his eyes after 10 years, and seeing this, Sun burst into tears of joy. She said, "It was very difficult during that time, but I believe it was worthwhile for the family to be together," gently stroking her husband's head as he lay in bed looking at her. A vegetative state refers to a patient who has lost consciousness and motor functions due to brain damage caused by cardiac arrest or other reasons, but whose digestive and respiratory functions are maintained, resulting in a deep coma. Modern medicine has yet to develop a treatment method to awaken patients from a vegetative state. Usually, if the vegetative state continues for more than 1 to 3 months, the chances of recovery are slim. However, there are rare cases where consciousness suddenly returns after several years of coma.

Last year in China, there was a case where a husband who became vegetative due to a traffic accident in 2020 woke up after 3 years. Ding, from Jiangsu Province, had to become the head of the household and earn living expenses while nursing her husband Li for 3 years. The savings they had were all spent on her husband's hospital bills. Facing difficult circumstances, Ding raised about 183,000 yuan (approximately 35 million KRW) from 4,055 donors through crowdfunding to cover her husband's medical expenses.

Whether due to his wife's devotion or not, Li miraculously regained consciousness. He later recovered to the point where he could have conversations and brush his teeth. Ding kept her promise to repay the donations once her husband recovered and returned the funds to all 4,055 donors. She even donated stationery to underprivileged schools. In an interview with local media, Ding said, "The messages of support sent through social networking services (SNS) were a great help."
