Cumulative Rainfall on the 5th: Gwangyang 154.2mm, Boseong 150.6mm, and Others Recorded

On Children's Day, the 5th, the Jeonnam region was hit by a deluge of over 200mm of rain, causing a series of accidents both large and small.


According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, as of 8 p.m. that day, heavy rain warnings were issued for Boseong, Gwangyang, and Suncheon, while heavy rain advisories were in effect for Gurye, Hwasun, Goheung, Yeosu, Jangheung, Gajin, Haenam, Wando, and Jindo.

Strong winds also blew fiercely, with gale warnings issued for Wando, Jindo, Heuksando, and Hongdo, and gale advisories in effect for Gurye, Goheung, Boseong, Yeosu, Gwangyang, Suncheon, Jangheung, Gangjin, Haenam, Yeongam, Muan, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, Mokpo, Sinan (excluding Heuksan-myeon), Geomundo, and Chodo.


On that day alone, rainfall measured 154.2mm in Gwangyang, 150.6mm in Boseong, 142.8mm in Suncheon, 102.2mm in Jangheung, 98.7mm in Jindo, 96.5mm in Gangjin, 90.9mm in Goheung, 88.2mm in Yeosu, and 78mm in Haenam, with cumulative rainfall since the previous day exceeding 200mm in some areas.


The deluge led to numerous rain-related emergency reports.


At around 1:58 p.m., on a road in Gwangyang-eup, Gwangyang-si, a vehicle passing under a bridge became stranded due to rising water, trapping people inside. Firefighters who arrived on the scene rescued a family of four without serious injuries.


At around 3 p.m. in Seomyeon, Suncheon-si, a culvert was flooded, trapping a person in a vehicle, but they evacuated on their own. At 6:15 p.m. in Hakdong, Yeosu-si, a report was received about construction materials falling at a construction site, and at 7:15 p.m., a report came in of water flooding a house in Jangheung-eup, Jangheung-gun.


At around 7:20 p.m., a tree fell onto a road in Yong-myeon, Damyang-gun, prompting fire authorities to clear the debris.


Additionally, as of 8 p.m., 52 emergency 119 calls were received, including reports of landslides on roads, sewage backflows, and requests for drainage support due to flooding.


The Meteorological Administration forecasts an additional 30 to 80mm of rain in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions until the last day of the Children's Day holiday on the 6th. Particularly, some areas are expected to experience heavy rain of 20 to 30mm per hour until dawn on the 6th.


A meteorological official stated, "Until dawn on the 6th, a low-pressure system and strong southerly winds will bring abundant moisture, causing strong rain accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning mainly around the southern coast, Jirisan area, and Jeju Island, with some regions receiving very heavy rainfall exceeding 100mm." He added, "Please be especially cautious about safety, such as refraining from camping, as rain falling in the upper reaches of valleys and rivers can cause sudden flooding downstream."
