Gyeonggi Province will continue to support the subscription of industrial accident insurance for online-based workers (platform workers) this year.
On the 5th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it is recruiting the first round of participants for the ‘Platform Worker Industrial Accident Insurance Support Project,’ which was introduced nationwide for the first time in 2021 to protect the rapidly increasing digital platform workers such as delivery workers, designated driver workers, and freight truck owners.
This year, Gyeonggi Province will support 2,800 platform workers in the province by covering 80% of the industrial accident insurance premium burden paid, up to a maximum monthly support amount of 12,040 KRW, for one year (12 months). Unlike last year, when support was provided only to delivery workers and designated driver workers, this year the support target has been expanded to include freight truck owners.
The project accepts applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, then verifies industrial accident insurance subscription and premium payment through the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service and the National Health Insurance Service before providing the support funds.
Gyeonggi Province is conducting this first round of recruitment until the 31st through the Gyeonggi Province Job Support Project integrated application system (apply.jobaba.net) or the mobile ‘Jobaba’ app (APP).
Eligibility for application includes those residing in the province as of the announcement date who are subscribed to industrial accident insurance and engaged in food or quick service delivery work, designated driver work, or freight truck ownership. Applications may close early if the budget is exhausted.
Gyeonggi Province expects this project to help prevent industrial accidents and protect workers who have newly subscribed to industrial accident insurance after the abolition of the ‘exclusivity requirement’?which mandated that workers provide labor to only one specific company?in July last year, as well as to restore workers’ self-esteem and improve awareness as laborers.
Jo Sang-gi, Director of the Labor Rights Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, "This project was prepared to strengthen the social safety net for platform workers who are in social blind spots such as high accident rates," adding, "We will continue to do our best to create a safe platform labor environment."
