Ceasefire Negotiation Green Light... Hamas Returns to Negotiation Table

US CIA Director Also Heads to Egypt as Negotiation Mediator

Palestinian armed group Hamas expressed a positive attitude toward the new ceasefire negotiation proposal presented by Israel and returned to the negotiation table after five days. This is seen as a breakthrough in the ceasefire talks that had been stalled for over five months.

On the 3rd (local time), Hamas issued a statement saying, "We emphasize that our leadership has positively reviewed the recently received ceasefire proposal," adding, "We will go to Cairo with the same positive attitude to reach an agreement," with Egypt currently mediating the negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Earlier, Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's political bureau, told Abbas Kamel, director of Egypt's General Intelligence Directorate (GNI), the previous day that they were reviewing the new ceasefire proposal with a 'positive stance.'

In this context, William Burns, director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), also arrived in Cairo on the same day. As a result, there is growing anticipation that the ceasefire negotiations may yield results. Some foreign media reported that U.S. government officials believe there has been some progress in negotiations for a temporary ceasefire and hostage release.

The U.S. internet media Axios, citing multiple sources, analyzed that Director Burns plans to cooperate with the Egyptian side to achieve a ceasefire, stating, "This suggests that the Joe Biden administration views the current moment as a very critical point in the negotiations."
