Every Friday from June 10 to July 12, Annex 3rd Floor and Original Downtown Area
Last Year's 'Busan and Records - Advanced Course on Methods of Recording the City'
Busan Modern History Museum will operate the ‘Urban Records School’ education program every Friday from May 10 to July 12 on the 3rd floor of the annex and throughout the original downtown area.
Under the subtitle ‘Citizen Oral Historian Training Course,’ this program focuses on enhancing participants' expertise and practical skills, conducting a total of 9 sessions including theoretical lectures, field practice, and workshops.
First, the theoretical education, conducted over 4 sessions, will be led by Dr. Hwang Kyung-sook (Busan City History Compilation Committee member, Cultural Heritage Administration Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee member), who has experience giving lectures on records and oral history at Busan National University and Pukyong National University.
Since 2011, Dr. Hwang has participated in numerous studies related to the investigation of oral literature and oral history in Busan, including the ‘Busan Oral Culture Series’ (15 volumes in total, Busan City History Compilation Committee), which compiles folktales and folk songs from all areas of Busan, and the oral records and materials collection ‘Refuge, Those People at That Time’ about Busan as a refuge capital.
Based on this experience, the lectures will be designed and operated to cover the concept and methods of records encompassing oral history, as well as the increasingly important aspect of ‘utilization of records.’
Instructor Bae Mi-rae, who participated in citizen cultural education and research projects related to records in Suyeong-gu and Yeongdo-gu, will leverage her practical experience to conduct 5 sessions of field practice in oral recording and proposal writing.
The field practice will take place in the original downtown area, a treasure trove of Busan’s modern history, and discussions are underway to promote it in cooperation with related institutions and private organizations. The final session will be dedicated to sharing results and the completion ceremony.
This program corresponds to an advanced course of last year’s ‘Busan and Records ? How to Record a City,’ which was held in the annex. Priority will be given to students who participated in last year’s program, and any remaining spots will be filled through additional recruitment.
Kim Ki-yong, director of the Busan Modern History Museum, stated, “This program was prepared to raise citizens’ interest in private records and to foster and revitalize record culture,” adding, “As a history museum dealing with modern history, we will make multifaceted efforts until the day when all citizens can routinely make records, big or small, in their daily lives.”
