Wando-gun and Bohae Brewery Join Hands to Launch the World's First Dasima Soju

Smooth Finish with Dasima Infusion Method, Wando Dasima Promotion Highly Effective

Wando County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) announced on the 3rd that it has signed a business agreement with local traditional company Bohae Brewery (CEO Lim Ji-seon) for the world’s first kelp soju (Dashi, Maju) launch.

The business agreement ceremony was held at Wando County Office, attended by Governor Shin Woo-cheol, Bohae Brewery Executive Director Seo Yong-min, and 10 other officials.

Wando County is the main production area of kelp, producing more than 70% of the national supply. Last year, the county proposed the development of soju using kelp to Bohae Brewery, resulting in the launch of ‘Dashi, Maju’.

While seaweed-based beers and Makgeolli have been released before, soju made using kelp is the world’s first.

‘Dashi, Maju’ means soju made using kelp and also carries the meaning of people facing each other again to share moments together.

‘Dashi, Maju’ will first be released in the Wando area and plans to expand its sales regions later. It will be showcased at the promotional booth of the Jangbogo Seafood Festival starting on the 3rd.

‘Dashi, Maju’ has an alcohol content of 15.8%, characterized by a smooth finish due to the kelp infusion method rather than the typical bitterness of soju.

Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “Developing products using local specialties is a good way for the region and companies to coexist,” adding, “I hope the launch of kelp soju will not only promote Wando kelp but also contribute to the local economy.”

Meanwhile, Wando kelp grows in waters formed by Maekbansuk (a type of volcanic stone) that purifies and generates nutritious minerals, making it tasty and rich in nutrients such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins.
