US Department of Commerce Preliminary Aluminum Antidumping Ruling: "Lower Than Competitors, Limited Direct Impact on Korea"

Ministry of Industry "Specific Impact to Be Closely Reviewed"

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced the preliminary determination results of the anti-dumping investigation on aluminum extrusions. For Korean companies, dumping margins were calculated at 0% for Almek and 2.42% for Shinyang, which are lower levels compared to competing countries.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated that on the 2nd (local time), the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the preliminary determination results of the anti-dumping investigation on aluminum extrusions from 14 countries, including Korea.

For Korean companies, dumping margins were calculated at 0% for Almek and 2.42% for Shinyang, while companies that did not respond to the Department of Commerce's investigation inquiries were assigned a margin of 43.56%.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy expects that the dumping margins for Korean aluminum extrusions were calculated at lower levels compared to competing countries in this preliminary determination, so the direct impact on the aluminum extrusion industry is expected to be minimal. A ministry official said, "There will likely be some tariff burden on automotive parts assembled and processed from aluminum extrusions. However, this is significantly lower than the dumping margin originally claimed by the complainant (66.4% → 2.42%), and we will closely review the specific impact with the related industry."

Since the initiation of the anti-dumping investigation, the ministry has held meetings and strategy sessions with the related industry to review response strategies. In addition, in March of this year, the head of the Trade Negotiations Headquarters sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and conveyed concerns to the U.S. side through several high-level meetings.

A ministry official stated, "The government plans to continue responding in close cooperation with the industry as one team until the final determination of this investigation is made, to ensure that our export interests are not unfairly damaged."
