Gangbuk-gu Launches the 7th Children and Youth Council

April 27 Inauguration Ceremony Held and 46 Members Appointed to the Children and Youth Council
Official Activities Begin Including Regular Meetings, Meeting with Ombudsperson, Meeting with District Council Members, and National Assembly Tour

Gangbuk-gu Launches the 7th Children and Youth Council

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) announced that on April 27th at 3 PM, the inauguration ceremony for the 7th Children and Youth Council was held in the large auditorium on the 4th floor of the Gangbuk-gu Office, officially launching the council.


The district operates the Children and Youth Council to guarantee the four major rights of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and to reflect children’s opinions in district administration.


From March 4th to April 11th, the district recruited students to participate in the Children and Youth Council and selected a total of 46 council members: 20 elementary school students, 24 middle school students, and 2 high school students.


The inauguration ceremony proceeded in the following order: ▲Congratulatory speeches by Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, and Choi Chi-hyo, Chairperson of Gangbuk-gu Council ▲Certificate awarding ceremony ▲Announcement of the chairperson election results ▲Remarks by committee chairpersons and secretaries of each standing committee ▲Decision on the schedule for the next session.


Through the election held that day, Yoon Hee-joo, a 3rd-year student at Seongam Girls’ Middle School, was elected as chairperson, and Kim Ji-yeon, a 2nd-year student at Seongam Girls’ Middle School, was elected as vice-chairperson. The council organization consists of four standing committees: ▲Protection and Welfare ▲Environment and Culture ▲Rights and Ethics ▲Youth and Education.


The selected Children and Youth Council members will hold regular meetings from that day until November to propose and decide on policies related to children and youth. They will also engage in various activities such as meetings with the ombudsperson who advocates and represents children’s rights, meetings with district council members, and visits to the National Assembly.


Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “Through the Children and Youth Council, we will guarantee the right to participation, one of the four major rights of children, and expand opportunities to participate in district administration activities. Going forward, Gangbuk-gu will continue to listen to children’s voices and do its best to ensure that children’s opinions are reflected in district administration.”
