Special Invitation to the 124th US Open in June by USGA
23 Appearances with a Total of 3 Major Wins
"US Open is a Special Tournament Defining Our Career"
‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA) will participate in the major tournament US Open.
The United States Golf Association (USGA), which hosts the tournament, announced on the 2nd (local time) that Woods was given a special invitation to the 124th US Open, and Woods accepted it. The US Open will be held from June 13 to 16 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina, USA. It is the third major tournament of the season. Woods has competed in the US Open 23 times so far. He won three times in 2000, 2002, and 2008.
He has not been able to participate normally in tournaments since a traffic accident in 2021. His world ranking dropped outside the top 700, and the exemption that allowed entry for five years after winning a major tournament (2019 Masters) expired, so he could not participate in the US Open. However, he got a chance to challenge for a major tournament victory through the USGA’s special invitation.
Woods said, "The US Open is a special tournament that defines our careers," and added, "I am honored to receive the invitation. Pinehurst, where the tournament is held, is a place of great significance." John Bodenheimer, who is in charge of the US Open at the USGA, explained, "You cannot talk about the US Open without Woods," and "Considering the achievements Woods has made in this tournament, it is natural to give him an entry."
In the 2000 tournament, Woods achieved a remarkable 15-stroke victory. In the 2008 tournament, he left many memorable moments, including winning in a playoff while dragging an injured leg. He has accumulated 15 wins in major tournaments, including the US Open. This is the second highest number of wins after ‘the living golf legend’ Jack Nicklaus (USA), who has 18 wins.
