Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) has significantly improved the deteriorated road conditions of ‘Macheon Jungang Market,’ the oldest traditional market in the area, to help ensure the safety of market visitors.

‘Macheon Jungang Market’ is an alley-type market that naturally formed in the late 1960s. It is not only one of the largest markets in Songpa-gu but also a representative traditional market in the region, with 135 stores offering a wide variety of items ranging from food to daily necessities, attracting continuous visitors.

However, after more than 50 years, many parts of the market roads were worn and damaged, and there were many inconveniences and safety risks such as poor drainage during rainfall.

In response, the district secured 160 million KRW from the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s special adjustment grant to carry out road maintenance. In April, a total of 330 meters in length and 4 to 5 meters in width of the road from the east gate to the west gate of Macheon Jungang Market was cut and repaved. On the 3rd of this month, the road surface was painted in green and ochre colors matching Songpa-gu’s CI colors to create a market atmosphere that reflects the local identity.

Earlier, from April 16, sewer pipe maintenance was completed over the course of a week. The sewer pipes around Macheon Jungang Market were over 30 years old and urgently needed repairs due to aging and damage.

Based on CCTV footage inside the pipes and on-site investigations, the district carried out 48 meters of sewer pipe improvements and 28 meters of concrete manhole repairs to prevent safety accidents and alleviate inconveniences for merchants.

Additionally, in the first half of this year, the district has been installing fire alarm facilities in all traditional markets and shopping districts within the area to create a safe traditional market environment where both merchants and residents can feel secure.
