The 10·29 Itaewon Disaster Bereaved Families Association and the Citizens’ Countermeasure Meeting held a press conference at 3 p.m. in front of the National Assembly stairs in Yeouido, Seoul, upon the passage of the special law, stating, “The Yoon Seok-yeol government must not try to hide or downplay anything.”
They said, “Although there are some regrets about this agreement, it is significant in that it has created the minimum requirements to establish an independent fact-finding investigation body,” and insisted, “The ‘Itaewon Disaster Fact-Finding Special Act’ must be promulgated immediately upon transmission to the government, and the Special Investigation Committee (Special Committee) must promptly begin its formation.”
Furthermore, they emphasized, “The government and the National Assembly must actively cooperate so that a proper independent fact-finding investigation body can be launched as soon as possible,” adding, “Through this, the fundamental causes and responsibilities of the disaster must be identified, the honor of the 159 victims restored, and measures to prevent recurrence must be established.”
People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy also welcomed the passage of the special law through bipartisan agreement in the National Assembly. In a statement released that day, the organization said, “It is regrettable that provisions related to the request for search and seizure warrants and the investigation of cases of non-prosecution or suspension of investigation were deleted,” but added, “Since it was a magnanimous decision for bipartisan agreement, we expect the government and the ruling party to actively cooperate in submitting materials and during the fact-finding investigation process, and for the Special Committee to conduct a thorough investigation without any sanctuary.”
