Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held a lighting ceremony for the Buddhist Celebration Tower to commemorate Buddha's Birthday in the year 2568 of the Buddhist calendar, organized by the Changwon Special City Buddhist Association at Changwon Square.
The lighting ceremony, held at 7 p.m. on the 1st, was attended by over 200 citizens including the chief monks of local temples, Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, and National Assembly member Choi Hyung-doo. The event began with the Three Refuges ritual and a recitation of the Heart Sutra in Hangul, followed by the lighting of the Buddhist Celebration Tower and a ritual circumambulation of the tower.
The Buddhist Celebration Tower installed by the Changwon Special City Buddhist Association at Changwon Square will remain lit until the 31st.
Mayor Hong said, “On the occasion of Buddha's Birthday in the year 2568 of the Buddhist calendar, I hope everyone reflects on the teachings of Buddhism and the true meaning of Buddha, and while looking at the lanterns, spends time with a compassionate heart that loves those around them.”
