In celebration of Family Month in May, acts of sharing for neighbors are taking place throughout Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro).
On May 1st, Gyeongdong Church in Anam-dong (Senior Pastor Han Byung-hee) prepared a hearty meal for low-income elderly residents.
The congregation was served nutritious mushroom shabu-shabu at a restaurant run by the child of a church member. Senior Pastor Han Byung-hee said, “We organized this event to offer a warm meal to the elderly in Anam-dong on Family Day,” adding, “We will continue to strive to practice respect and sharing for the local elderly.”
Since 2018, Gyeongdong Church has been sponsoring homemade soup and basic side dishes to neighbors on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. In addition, through collaboration with the Anam-dong Community Security Council, they actively support neighbors by providing feminine hygiene products to vulnerable women in the area and continuing various neighborly activities.
Also, on April 29th, the Saemaeul Women’s Association of Jongam-dong (President Park Bu-im) held a “Sharing Side Dishes Full of Spring Fragrance” event at the Jongam-dong Community Center for elderly living alone and middle-aged single-person households in need of care.
They delivered six types of side dishes made with spring greens, young radish kimchi, and high-protein ingredients to 120 households in need.
For this event, the Saemaeul Women’s Association members spent a week preparing ingredients, cooking, and packaging, working hard with dedication. President Park Bu-im said, “We hope our neighbors enjoy the spring-fragrant side dishes made with the heartfelt care of our members and stay healthy this spring,” adding, “The Saemaeul Women’s Association will continue various volunteer activities for marginalized neighbors, so we ask for everyone’s interest and support.”
Meanwhile, on April 25th, volunteers from the Jangwi 2-dong Volunteer Camp (Camp Director Lee Kyung-sook) visited the home of an elderly person with mobility difficulties, whom they learned about from a village nurse, and carried out a thorough cleaning by removing a large amount of long-neglected household waste.
They organized the refrigerator and storage cabinets and cleaned every corner of the house. They also tidied up the yard and vegetable garden, planting chili peppers, lettuce, flowers, and more to help maintain the garden.
The elderly recipient, Mr. Yoo ○○○, said, “I was unable to even think about cleaning the house due to my physical condition, so I am very happy that it has become so clean,” expressing gratitude by adding, “Seeing the cleaned house with the help of many people makes me feel healthy both physically and mentally.”
