Daegu Catholic University Awards 'Choi Jae-kyung Scholarship' of 1 Million Won Each to 55 Students

Urging Dedication to Studies While Honoring the Spirit of Independence Activists

Daegu Catholic University awarded the '1st Choi Jae-kyung Scholarship' at the Employment and Startup Center on the 30th of last month.


This scholarship was given to a total of 55 students, each receiving 1 million KRW.

The 'Choi Jae-kyung Scholarship' was established through mutual cooperation between the descendants of patriot Jeong Haeng-don?Monsignor Jeong Eun-gyu, Jeong Sin-gyu, Jeong O-gyu, Jeong Wan-gyu?and Daegu Catholic University to honor the will of Mrs. Choi Jae-kyung, wife of patriot Jeong Haeng-don.


Mrs. Choi Jae-kyung was born in Daegu in 1912 and graduated from Daegu Public Girls' High School (now Gyeongbuk Girls' High School). She married patriot Jeong Haeng-don, and despite her husband's imprisonment for 3 years and 1 month and the violent house searches by Japanese police, she continued her dedication to the nation and family as the wife of an independence activist.


Mrs. Choi also had a deep connection with Daegu Catholic University. In 1952, when Father Jeon Seok-jae, a classmate of her younger brother-in-law Father Jeong Haeng-man’s ordination, founded Hyoseong Women's College, Mrs. Choi actively participated in seeking donors to support the establishment of the school.


Seong Han-gi, President of Daegu Catholic University, said, “I hope students will uphold the legacy and will of the independence activists by practicing love for the country and neighbors, and devote themselves more sincerely to their studies.”
