Google Signs AI Content Deal with World's Largest Media Group News Corp

US WSJ and UK The Times Group
"Agreed to pay 8.3 billion KRW annually for content use"

Google has signed a contract with News Corporation, the world's largest media group based in the United States, for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) content and product development, according to IT specialist media The Information on the 30th of last month (local time).

News Corp is the parent company of Dow Jones, which publishes the influential US newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), major US publisher HarperCollins, the UK's The Times, and Australia's Euro Broadcasting. Google plans to use content from News Corp media such as WSJ to enhance its AI models and develop related AI features.

The Information reported, citing sources, that under this contract, Google will pay News Corp an annual fee of $5 million to $6 million (approximately 6.9 billion to 8.3 billion KRW).

As competition in generative AI, including ChatGPT, intensifies, AI companies are continuously signing licensing agreements to use digital content from news media.

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and the British daily Financial Times (FT) signed a partnership on the 29th of last month for content use and AI feature development. Previously, OpenAI had signed similar agreements with US news agency AP News, German media Axel Springer, French Le Monde, and Spanish Prisa Media.

However, on the same day, OpenAI, along with Microsoft (MS), was sued by eight US newspaper outlets claiming copyright infringement. In December last year, OpenAI and MS were also sued by The New York Times (NYT), which claimed copyright infringement, and the trial is currently ongoing.
