Jin Gyo-hoon, Gangseo-gu Mayor, Joins 'Bye Bye Plastic' Challenge

Jin Gyo-hoon, the mayor of Gangseo District Office in Seoul, participated in the ‘Bye-Bye Plastic’ challenge on April 29 to reduce plastic usage.

The ‘Bye-Bye Plastic’ challenge is a campaign promoted by the Ministry of Environment to protect the environment by reducing unnecessary plastic use and encouraging the use of reusable products.

Mayor Jin, nominated by Kim Mi-kyung, the mayor of Eunpyeong District Office, took part in the challenge and urged residents to join in reducing single-use items and adopting reusable products in daily life.

The district is promoting the ‘Making Gangseo Zero Single-Use Items’ project to reduce single-use item consumption and practice environmental protection together with residents.

First, during festivals such as the Heo Jun Festival and Gangseo Spring Light Festa, reusable containers are supplied to food booths and food trucks to fundamentally block the generation of single-use items and reduce waste.

Also, every Saturday at Wondang Neighborhood Park in Deungchon-dong, the district operates the ‘Kkachi Sharing Market,’ where residents exchange or sell reusable and recyclable items, with the proceeds donated to neighbors in need.

Moreover, a ‘tumbler sterilizing and cleaning machine’ has been installed inside the government office, and all staff practice reducing paper cup use by using reusable cups during various meetings.

In addition, the district is making efforts to reduce single-use items by operating resource circulation experience programs, running single-use item reduction consultants, and using umbrella rain removers instead of plastic bags.

Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said, “Small daily habits for environmental protection, such as using tumblers and shopping bags, will bring great changes to our environment,” and added, “I hope all residents will participate in reducing plastic use for both current and future generations.”

Mayor Jin nominated Ryu Kyung-gi, mayor of Jungnang District Office, Choi Dong-cheol, chairman of Gangseo District Council, and Shim Min, mayor of Imsil County, as the next participants in the challenge.
