Democratic Party Merges with Deobureo Minjuyeonhap... 96.4% Approval

171 Members of the 22nd Democratic Party

The Democratic Party of Korea resolved to merge with the Democratic United Party through a vote. As a result, the number of Democratic Party members in the 22nd National Assembly will be 171.


On the morning of the 30th, the Democratic Party held a Central Committee meeting and put the "Resolution on Merger and Designation of Merger Delegated Body" to a vote among the central committee members. The vote, which lasted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., passed. Out of 600 central committee members, 417 (69.5%) participated in the vote, with 402 votes in favor and 15 against. 96.4% of the voters supported the motion. The 600 central committee members consist of members of the National Assembly, regional committee heads, the party leader, and individuals recommended by the chairperson of the Central Committee.

Prior to this, the Democratic Party conducted a vote among all party members with voting rights on this matter. The vote, held over two days from the 28th to the 29th, saw 306,303 participants (21.1%) out of a total of 1,219,010 eligible party members, with 291,783 (95.3%) voting in favor.


With the merger between the Democratic Party and the Democratic United Party confirmed on this day, the total number of Democratic Party members in the 22nd National Assembly will be 171.


Four elected members, including Yong Hye-in, Jeong Hye-kyung, Jeon Jong-deok, and Han Chang-min, returned to their original parties?Progressive Party (Jeong Hye-kyung, Jeon Jong-deok) and New Progressive Alliance (Yong Hye-in, Han Chang-min)?after being expelled by the Democratic United Party.
