Jindo-gun Wins Grand Prize in Local Government Category at Marine Tourism Awards

Selected as an Excellent Case Including Jindo Sinbi Sea Road Festival

Jindo County in Jeollanam-do was selected as the grand prize winner in the local government category of the 2024 Marine Tourism Awards at the Spring Academic Conference hosted by the Korean Society of Marine Tourism.

According to the county on the 30th, the Marine Tourism Awards recognize outstanding cases of local governments, companies, and individuals who have contributed to the development of the marine tourism industry. Awards are given in categories such as local governments and public institutions, experiential tourism (private sector award), and corporate management.

The Korean Society of Marine Tourism is a corporation under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries that has been conducting academic activities in the field of marine tourism since 2006, promoting research and exchange related to marine tourism and contributing to the development and application of the discipline.

Jindo County utilizes the natural phenomenon where the 2.8 km-long Jindo Mysterious Sea Road, designated as National Scenic Site No. 9, opens, and annually holds the Jindo Mysterious Sea Road Festival, a marine tourism festival representing South Korea.

The Jindo Mysterious Sea Road Festival is one of the most visited festivals by tourists from Europe, the United States, and Japan. To develop it into a world-class festival, Jindo County was selected as the grand prize winner in the local government category after evaluations of outstanding cases in the marine tourism industry.

In particular, the festival, along with various marine tourism resources such as the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car, Jindo Tourist Cruise, the Santa Monica ferry connecting Jindo and Jeju, and the Jukrim Fishing Village Experience, received high marks for their utilization.

Additionally, Jukrim Fishing Village in Jindo was honored with the private sector grand prize in the experiential tourism category, marking a double celebration.

Jukrim Fishing Village is known for its beautiful scenery where pine trees blend harmoniously, and offers various experiential activities such as fish herding and clam digging, attracting mainly family tourists.

County Governor Kim Hee-soo said, “We are doing our best to create a tourism Jindo where many people visit and stay by utilizing Jindo’s beautiful marine tourism resources,” adding, “We will develop and revitalize various tourism policies for the future growth of the marine tourism industry.”
