Gyeryong City in Chungnam is expected to gain momentum in its project with the securing of 16 billion KRW in national funding for the construction of the ‘Knowledge Industry Center,’ a major pledge of the 8th local government administration.

On the 29th, Gyeryong City announced that the ‘2025 Public Rental New Knowledge Industry Center Construction Project,’ led by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, has passed the feasibility evaluation by the ministry.

The Knowledge Industry Center will be built on a 4,883㎡ site within the Gyeryong 2nd Industrial Complex, with a total floor area of 10,308㎡ (5 floors above ground, 1 basement floor). A total of 25.3 billion KRW will be invested, including 16 billion KRW in national funds and 9.3 billion KRW in local funds, with completion planned for 2029.

The city received high evaluations for securing an optimal site location and plans to leverage the advantages of the defense capital to foster the K-Defense Industry as a regionally specialized new industry.

The Knowledge Industry Center, planned as a public rental facility, will house a management office and convenience facilities (such as a restaurant) on the first floor. The 2nd and 3rd floors will consist of 34 units of 25-pyeong (83㎡) type rooms designed for R&D offices and venture/startup companies.

Additionally, the 4th and 5th floors will include 54 rental units in total, such as eight 30-pyeong (100㎡) units and twelve 50-pyeong (165㎡) units for standard factories. The city plans to attract research and production companies in the power support system sector, including military supplies.

Through the construction of the Knowledge Industry Center, the city aims to establish a foundation for commercialization technology development (R&BD) of the K-Defense Industry and to activate new technology venture startups, fostering the power support system sector of the defense industry as a regionally specialized new industry.

This initiative is expected to revitalize the local economy and significantly contribute to the creation of a Chungcheong region-wide K-Defense Industry cluster along with Nonsan and Daejeon, as well as promote balanced regional development.

Mayor Lee Eung-woo stated, “With the Knowledge Industry Center project passing the feasibility evaluation by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, we have secured a new growth engine to drive regional development through defense industry promotion and job creation. We will concentrate all administrative efforts to ensure that the ‘Powerful Defense City Future Strategy’ initiatives, which the city is prioritizing starting with the Knowledge Industry Center, are fully achieved.”

Meanwhile, Gyeryong City’s ‘Powerful Defense City Future Strategy’ initiatives include, besides the construction of the Knowledge Industry Center, the establishment of a K-Defense sensor product testing and certification institution, the creation of a defense and advanced technology industrial complex, the construction of a military museum, and the attraction of the Korea Defense Research Institute (branch) and the Armed Forces Medical Academy.
