The Korean Women Cartoonists Association announced on the 28th that it has selected Sanho's work, "And the Witch Went to the Forest," as this year's Women Cartoonist Work Award.
This award was newly established in 2023 by the Korean Women Cartoonists Association. The first Women Cartoonist Work Award was given to Haena Jeong's "Jonathan's Voice."
This year's winning work, Sanho's "And the Witch Went to the Forest," depicts the narrative of women, represented by witches in the story, who unlike people who return to nature upon death, become a greater natural environment after death. Through this, the author conveys that women fiercely live their lives and even their deaths are lived experiences.
Through the story of witches living in a world threatened by environmental pollution and climate change, the author expresses sorrow over the destruction and disappearance of loved ones and comforts those who endure endless seasons with a persistent aching heart. Although feelings of helplessness and guilt amid the overwhelming flow of destruction can sicken the mind, the book states, "There are more survivors than those who have lived, so we must take care of each other."
The work was praised by the judges as an excellent masterpiece for connecting this fantasy setting with the daily lives of women living in the present and effectively drawing readers' empathy.
