"ID Verification in Progress, Father Reported Deceased"
Gongju City "Will Hold Responsible Official Accountable"
Controversy has arisen after the Tancheon-myeon Office in Gongju-si, Chungnam, reported a living person as deceased.
According to Gongju City on the 26th, a post titled "Tancheon-myeon Death Report Mistake" was uploaded on the "Requests to the Mayor" section of the Gongju City website on the 16th.
The author, Mr. A, stated, "The Tancheon-myeon Office reported my father as deceased instead of my grandfather," and added, "I found out that my father was reported dead while verifying the authenticity of an ID due to a personal schedule."
He claimed, "When I contacted the office and spoke with the claims adjuster, I heard that such mistakes had occurred multiple times," and "There was a similar incident before, and they settled for 2 million won, and they are offering us 2 million won as consolation money, but it doesn't seem logical."
He also questioned, "If we had not realized this immediately and only found out after several months by contacting them first, shouldn't there be consolation money for that as well?"
In response, the Planning and Audit Office of Gongju City said, "Tancheon-myeon is currently processing comprehensive administrative compensation following the claimant's demand for damages," and added, "Matters related to compensation should be coordinated with the insurance company."
They further stated, "Since it was discovered that Tancheon-myeon negligently registered a living person as deceased in the resident registration system, the responsible public official will be disciplined."
It is known that another employee at Tancheon-myeon apologized to a claimant for a similar mistake in January.
