SK Telecom Obtains ISO/IEC 42001 Certification
Recognized for Effective AI Risk Management
SK Telecom announced on the 25th that it has become the first domestic telecommunications company to obtain the international standard certification for the 'AI Management System,' 'ISO/IEC 42001.'
The certification awarding ceremony was held at the SKT Tower in Jung-gu, Seoul, with attendees including SKT's Head of External Cooperation Jeong Jae-heon (President) and Korea Standards Association Chairman Kang Myung-soo. 'ISO/IEC 42001' (Artificial Intelligence Management System) is a global standard related to AI management systems jointly developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It was established to enable companies and organizations to build and operate AI systems based on ethical responsibility.
The detailed evaluation criteria include ▲ AI policy ▲ AI risk assessment ▲ AI risk treatment ▲ AI impact assessment ▲ AI ethics compliance and regulatory response ▲ transparency of AI management processes. Through obtaining this certification, SKT has been internationally recognized for effectively implementing AI risk management.
Since declaring itself a 'Global AI Company' in September last year, SKT has been implementing an AI pyramid strategy centered on three main areas: ▲ AI infrastructure ▲ AIX ▲ AI services. This strategy aims to innovate industries and daily life through 'self-strengthening' by advancing internal AI technologies and 'collaboration' with domestic and international partners.
In January, SKT decided to introduce AI governance into company management based on the ethical use of AI technology and a transparent decision-making system. To this end, it established a dedicated AI governance organization overseen by the Chief Growth Officer (CGO) to establish and solidify governance processes.
Additionally, last month, SKT unveiled the basic principles of AI governance called 'T.H.E AI,' laying the foundation for a decision-making system based on the identity of a telecommunications company. 'T.H.E AI' stands for 'by Telco (telecommunication technology-based), for Humanity (people-oriented), with Ethics (ethics-centered) AI.'
Jeong Jae-heon, Head of External Cooperation at SKT, stated, "By obtaining this international standard certification, we have strengthened our position as an AI company that communicates with stakeholders on the global stage based on trust and safety."
