In the Philippines, a heatwave with a perceived temperature reaching up to 48 degrees Celsius has caused school closures and casualties.

According to major foreign media such as AFP and Xinhua News Agency on the 24th (local time), schools at all levels suspended face-to-face classes following warnings from meteorological authorities that the perceived temperature exceeded 42 degrees in 11 areas across five provinces, including the capital Manila, reaching dangerous levels. Last week, about 7,000 public schools nationwide in the Philippines suspended face-to-face classes due to the heatwave.
The meteorological authorities forecast that the perceived temperature, considering humidity and other factors, would reach the dangerous level of 42 degrees in at least 30 local administrative districts such as cities nationwide. In the northern Apari area, the perceived temperature soared to a nationwide high of 48 degrees the previous day and was expected to reach 45 degrees on the same day.
In Manila, the perceived temperature reached 45 degrees and the actual temperature was 37.1 degrees the previous day, leading several schools to conduct remote classes, and the perceived temperature was expected to rise to 44 degrees on the same day.
The meteorological authorities expressed concerns that exposure to the heatwave could cause heat cramps, exhaustion, and heatstroke. According to the Philippine health authorities, at least 34 cases of heat-related illnesses were reported nationwide from the beginning of the year until the 18th, with six deaths among them.
