Pohang City Promotes Building a Premium Memorial Park by Fostering Citizen Consensus through Communication Pohang City is striving to build a premium memorial park by fostering public consensus through communication.

On the 24th, the city held a symposium titled "Yeongil Garden: Thinking About the Future with Citizens" at the Batmeori Lifelong Learning Center for about 450 residents of Nam-gu.

The symposium focused on understanding funeral culture and fostering communication and consensus among citizens, with attendees including residents from five applicant areas in Nam-gu?Guryongpo, Yeonil, Donghae, and two locations in Janggi?as well as residents from Nam-gu's towns and villages, professors, and experts related to funeral services.

The symposium began with a keynote speech outlining the vision for Pohang City's memorial park, followed by presentations on ▲The Future of Memorial Parks in Response to Changes in Cremation and Funeral Culture ▲What Should Yeongil Garden Contain? The Future of the Memorial Park ▲Funeral Facility Media Coverage: "Towards Overcoming Aversion," and concluded with a comprehensive discussion and a Q&A session with the audience.

During the event, the city emphasized its commitment to establishing the memorial park as an 'eco-friendly' cultural and artistic park offering 'one-stop funeral services,' aiming to dispel the long-standing negative perceptions of such facilities as undesirable and to build it as an essential welfare facility for residents, thereby fostering public consensus.

Additionally, the city explained policies to support the villages selected as the memorial park site with a fund of 4 billion KRW, 20% of cremation facility usage fees for 30 years, and provision of local jobs. For the towns and villages hosting the facility, the city plans to provide 8 billion KRW in funds and support welfare and long-standing projects worth 4.5 billion KRW.

The city also announced plans to lead various regional economic revitalization efforts, including supporting consolation and harmony projects worth 300 to 500 million KRW for areas that were not selected in the public contest.

Prior to this, on the 18th, Pohang City held a symposium at the Hwanyeo-dong Youth Training Center for residents of Buk-gu.

The event was attended by residents from two applicant areas in Buk-gu?Cheongha and Songra?as well as residents from Buk-gu's towns and villages. Discussions included questions about the utilization of existing crematoriums after the installation of new cremation facilities and citizens' opinions that the memorial park could become a world-class attraction if equipped with complex facilities such as performance halls and cinemas.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "We will continuously communicate with citizens to provide accurate information about the memorial park and strive to establish it as a premium funeral culture facility," adding, "I ask for the active support of citizens for the construction of the memorial park, an essential facility necessary for Pohang's future and its residents."

Pohang City has been focusing on building public consensus through activities such as study tours to advanced sites for applicant area residents, itinerant briefings, and exhibitions of photos of world memorial parks. The city plans to select the optimal site within the first half of this year through sufficient communication with applicant area residents before finalizing the site selection.
