G-Class Electric Vehicle with Individual Motors on Each Wheel, World Premiere

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the off-road sport utility vehicle (SUV) G-Class electric vehicle G 580 with EQ Technology for the first time on the 24th (local time) in Beijing, China. It was presented first to the global press ahead of Auto China 2024, which opens the next day locally.

The new car combines iconic elements of the existing G-Class, such as its angular exterior design, with various new technologies. The body maintains the same ladder-type frame structure as before, reinforced to suit the electric drivetrain. The battery capacity is 116 kWh, integrated into the frame. The maximum driving range on a single charge is up to 473 km (WLTP standard).

Along with the existing independent double wishbone front suspension, a newly developed rear axle is combined. Four individually controlled electric motors near the wheels deliver 432 kW (approximately 590 horsepower) of power.

It features off-road driving functions suitable for rough or unpaved surfaces, such as the G-Turn function that allows the vehicle to rotate almost in place, the G-Steering function that significantly reduces the turning radius during off-road driving, and a 3-stage intelligent off-road crawling cruise control that maintains optimal traction while the driver focuses on terrain handling. It demonstrates up to 100% climbing ability on appropriate surfaces and can stably drive on slopes up to 35 degrees.

The wading depth is up to 850 mm, 150 mm deeper than before. The company explained that it increases propulsion through a unique reduction ratio and shows differential lock functionality with intelligent torque vectoring. It produces various sounds, including driving noises similar to the existing G-Class.

A black panel radiator grille is available as an optional feature. The MBUX infotainment system, Nappa leather multifunction steering wheel, and interior mood lighting come as standard. Keyless go, temperature-controlled cup holders, Burmester sound system, transparent bonnet, and off-road cockpit are available as options. Applying the individually customizable Manufaktur option allows for over one million different combinations of colors, spare wheel rings, seat graphics, stitching, and more.

The vehicle is scheduled to be released domestically this year. Markus Sch?fer, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Mercedes-Benz, said, "With the innovative system featuring four individually controllable electric motors, we have once again elevated the vehicle's performance to a new level," adding, "We maintained the familiar angular exterior design and realized the distinctive characteristics of the G-Class that everyone prefers."
