Installed 40 Units Along a Busy Main Road with High Foot Traffic
On the day of the 22nd National Assembly election, a person who posted a large number of illegal election campaign banners was reported to the police.
The Gwangju Metropolitan City Election Commission announced on the 24th that on the 10th, Mr. A was reported to the police for installing 40 banners supporting and appealing for a specific candidate he supports along a busy main road.
Article 254 (Violation of Election Campaign Period) Paragraph 1 of the Public Official Election Act stipulates that anyone who conducts election campaigning by methods other than those prescribed by this law before the closing time of voting on election day shall be punished by imprisonment for up to 3 years or a fine of up to 6 million won.
Additionally, according to Article 90 (Prohibition of Installation of Facilities) Paragraph 1, no one may install banners to influence the election from 120 days before the election day until the election day, except as prescribed by this law. Those who violate this by installing banners shall be punished by imprisonment for up to 2 years or a fine of up to 4 million won under Article 256 (Violation of Various Restriction Provisions) Paragraph 3.
A representative of the Gwangju Election Commission stated, “Free election campaigning is guaranteed within the scope permitted by law,” and added, “Any acts violating the law will be strictly dealt with at any time to establish a fair election order.”
