Former 5·18 Executive Who Sent Dozens of Sexually Harassing Texts Also Sentenced to Prison in Appeal Trial

The 2nd Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court on the 24th dismissed both the appeal of A (63), a former executive of the May 18 organization who was sentenced to six months in prison in the first trial on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (obscenity using communication media), and the prosecutor's appeal.

A was indicted for sending 15 sexually humiliating text messages and 44 messages causing fear and anxiety to the director of the May Mothers' House via social networking services (SNS) over two hours from 4 p.m. on January 11 last year.

It was investigated that A committed these acts because he could not contain his anger after the director of the May Mothers' House shared critical posts about him with others.

The court stated, "Although the defendant made an additional criminal deposit for the victim during this appeal, the victim expressed a refusal to accept the deposit and wishes for severe punishment of the defendant," adding, "The defendant committed the crime again during the recidivism period, and as in the first trial, there is no change in circumstances for mitigation, so the original sentence is appropriate within the discretionary range."
