May 3rd, Over 3,000 Citizens and Students Participate
Presenting a Majestic Spectacle with Historical Significance
On the 14th, Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do announced that the highlight of the Yeosu Geobukseon Festival, the ‘Tongjeyeong Parade,’ is already drawing great anticipation as it is expected to feature a record-breaking participation of over 3,000 performers.
The ‘Tongjeyeong Parade’ reenacts the historic event when Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the Jeolla Left Naval Commander stationed in Yeosu, led his first expedition and achieved victory against the Japanese forces who had occupied the seas of Gyeongsang Province during the Imjin War.
On the first day of the festival, May 3rd, from 6 p.m., the parade will take place along the route starting from the Citizens’ Hall and continuing to Yi Sun-sin Square in Jungang-dong.
In particular, the Navy Honor Guard and Military Band will enliven the festival atmosphere with their resounding military music and parade, while about 50 students from Yeosu Sinwol Elementary School will march dressed in traditional attire of Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
They will lead cavalry and naval processions, reenacting scenes such as the Geobukseon (Turtle Ship), Panokseon, Pojakseon, Oksurae, Yeonggeo, and military council meetings at Jinhaeru, along with various historical pieces including the Japanese warship (Kobaya).
A total of over 3,000 citizens and students are scheduled to participate in this Tongjeyeong Parade, wearing mid-Joseon period costumes and presenting various performances that offer both historical significance and a magnificent spectacle.
The participants are preparing diverse performances that will deliver emotion and grandeur, expected to leave a deep impression on the audience.
Jeon Jae-min, Secretary General of the Festival Promotion Committee, stated, “We are making efforts to showcase a newly transformed festival by recruiting 3,000 citizens and students from various fields,” adding, “Programs with low engagement have been discontinued and replaced with experience-oriented programs to provide visitors with a more immersive experience.”
