Bang Jae-seung, the Emergency Response Committee Chair of Seoul National University College of Medicine and Hospital, announced this at a press conference held at Yang Yun-seon Hall in the Convergence Building of Seoul National University College of Medicine, Jongno-gu, Seoul, at 10:30 a.m. on the 24th. Chair Bang explained, "Professors have been voluntarily submitting their resignation letters since March 25, and from the date of submission by each individual professor, resignations will be executed based on personal choice after the 30th."
Regarding the reason for the full suspension of medical services on the 30th, he explained, "As medical professionals who must maintain daily vigilance for patient care despite an unending bleak situation, we intend to somewhat recover from the extreme physical and mental exhaustion."
The Emergency Response Committee will discuss periodic suspension of medical services as a measure to prevent medical staff burnout at a later time.
Additionally, to establish scientific and rational grounds for determining an appropriate number of doctors, a call for research publication papers on the "Scientific Estimation of the Required Number of Doctors Reflecting Medical Reform Scenarios Desired by the Public" will be held.
Meanwhile, the Emergency Response Committee of Seoul National University College of Medicine and Hospital plans to transition to its third phase starting next month on the 1st, continuing policy research and proposals for medical system improvement as well as activities to resolve the medical crisis.
Four leading professors of the second phase Emergency Response Committee, including Chair Bang, will leave the hospital as of the 1st of next month. They are professors from thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and family medicine. Chair Bang stated, "All four leaders are professors responsible for essential medical care. I don’t understand the meaning of 'protecting my patients at the hospital' under the current circumstances. In a national crisis that may never be reversible, I believe I cannot only care for my patients, so I have stepped out." He added, "No matter how much we blame the government or doctors later, it will be useless. Since the government does not trust our sincerity, we are truly intending to resign."
