Western Europe's First Electrification Plant... Production Targeted for 2026
170 Billion Investment by 2030... "Bridgehead for European Expansion"
Hyundai Mobis is investing 170 billion KRW to build a factory in Spain and produce Volkswagen-exclusive electric vehicle battery systems (BSA).
On the 23rd (local time), Hyundai Mobis announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the BSA factory in Navarra, Spain. This is the first time Hyundai Mobis has established a dedicated electrification factory in Western Europe. The BSA is a finished product that combines electronic components such as control devices in the battery pack to ensure the battery operates safely and efficiently in electric vehicles.
The Hyundai Mobis Spain BSA factory site covers approximately 150,000㎡, equivalent to 21 soccer fields. The factory, with a total floor area of 50,000㎡, plans to produce up to 360,000 BSAs annually. Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2026. The BSAs produced here will be installed in the next-generation electric vehicle platform mass-produced at Volkswagen Group's Pamplona factory, located about 14 km away.
Hyundai Mobis plans to invest about 170 billion KRW in this factory by 2030 to establish state-of-the-art electrification equipment technology. The company aims to expand its supply network by making a full-scale entry into Western Europe. Choosing Navarra, Spain, as the factory site was based on this strategic decision. Navarra is located in the northernmost part of Spain, bordering France. It is known as the second-largest automobile production base in Europe after Germany. Another advantage is that many European automakers and parts suppliers are concentrated within a 2 to 3-hour distance from Pamplona.
Jung In-bo, head of Hyundai Mobis Spain Electrification Factory Corporation, stated, "We will strive to become a long-term partner of our customers by supplying parts stably and work to diversify supply sources in the European region as well as for subsequent vehicle models."
