Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake Near Hualien, Taiwan... Strong Aftershocks for 3 Days

On the 23rd (local time), a series of earthquakes occurred near the eastern Taiwan Hualien offshore area. It is analyzed as aftershocks of the recent strong earthquake.


According to the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan (Meteorological Agency), at 2:26 a.m. on the same day, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred 29 km south of Hualien County, Taiwan. The epicenter was at 23.72 degrees north latitude and 121.66 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 10 km.

Then, at 2:32 a.m., a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred 15 km south-southwest of Hualien County. The epicenter was at 23.85 degrees north latitude and 121.54 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 6 km.


Casualties and property damage caused by the earthquakes have not yet been confirmed. However, it is reported that building shaking was felt even in the capital, Taipei.


These earthquakes are analyzed as aftershocks of the magnitude 7.2 strong earthquake that occurred on the 3rd. Previously, on the 22nd, a series of earthquakes with magnitudes above 5 also occurred.
