Biden Leads in Multilateral Virtual Showdown
U.S. President Joe Biden is leading former President Donald Trump in a presidential approval poll conducted among registered voters. Analysts suggest that the judicial risks are beginning to be reflected in public opinion as Trump's criminal trial intensifies.
According to foreign media on the 22nd (local time), a poll conducted by the U.S. public broadcaster PBS, NewsHour, and Marist from the 16th to 18th (local time) among 1,047 registered voters showed President Biden with a 51% approval rating, leading former President Trump, who had 48%, by 3 percentage points. The margin of error is ±3.4 percentage points.
In an earlier poll conducted earlier this month, Biden had 50% support and Trump had 48%, a 2 percentage point lead, but the gap widened by 1 percentage point in this latest poll.
Notably, this poll was conducted after former President Trump's criminal trial officially began on the 15th, suggesting that his judicial risks may have negatively influenced public opinion. Trump is currently on trial for allegedly paying hush money to cover up a sexual misconduct scandal just before the 2016 presidential election and for falsifying company records related to those payments.
Among voters who expressed a strong intention to definitely vote in the upcoming November election, Biden recorded 53%, showing a significant 6 percentage point lead over Trump, who had 47%.
President Biden also led former President Trump in a multi-candidate hypothetical matchup. Including independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. and other third-party candidates, Biden received 43% support, Trump 38%, and Kennedy Jr. 14%. Kennedy Jr. appeared to draw more votes away from Trump. He garnered support from 8% of Democrats, 10% of Republicans, and 27% of independents.
