Nuclear Medicine Institute Holds Workshop on Developing Radiation Dose Standards for Ultra-High Dose Rate Radiotherapy

The Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences (Director Jin-Kyung Lee) announced that it held the "Workshop on Development of National Measurement Standards-Based Precise Dose Measurement and Control Technology" for the development of radiation dose standards for ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy on the 22nd.

Experts from the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, and National Cancer Center participated in this workshop to present and discuss research achievements on the development of dose standards for ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy.


Ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy is a next-generation cancer treatment method that delivers high-intensity radiation within one second to selectively destroy cancer cells, enabling treatment of cancers that are resistant to conventional radiotherapy. It has been reported to have a cancer treatment effect more than 1000 times faster than general radiotherapy. The Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences is currently conducting preclinical trials on animals, and it has not yet been commercialized domestically. Research on biological mechanisms applicable to actual clinical use requires securing an ultra-high dose rate radiation irradiation system.


Jin-Kyung Lee, Director of the Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, said, “The Institute, which has been active as a specialized institution for dose measurement of domestic and international radiation equipment, has embarked on developing dose standards for the advanced ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy device,” adding, “We hope that strengthening radiation quality will allow the public to receive more precise and safer radiation therapy.”
