"Glory Welcomed with Pure Passion and Artistic Spirit"
Yoon In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, sent a congratulatory message on the 22nd to conductor Lee Seung-won, the first Korean to win the "Malko International Conducting Competition for Young Conductors." He stated, "This is an opportunity to once again imprint the outstanding artistry of K-Classic on the international stage," and "I pay tribute to the glory achieved through pure passion for music and artistic spirit." He added, "I expect this brilliant achievement to greatly contribute to the public's interest and affection toward our classical music scene."
The Malko International Conducting Competition for Young Conductors, which Lee won, is a globally prestigious gateway to classical music hosted by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The grand prize is awarded to young conductors under the age of 35. It has been held every three years since 1965 in honor of founding conductor Nikolai Malko.
On the 20th, Lee's name was added to the list of past winners, which includes Dmitri Matviyenko and Ryan Bancroft. He is a gifted musician who completed the highest viola performance course at the Berlin University of the Arts Hans Eisler and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in conducting. He also completed the highest conducting performance course at the Hamburg University of Music.
Until 2017, he was active in the string quartet "Novus Quartet," and from 2018 to 2022, he served as a professor at the Leipzig University of Music in Germany. Currently, he works as the principal associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in the United States. This year, he will also appear on various stages, including the "New Year's Concert with the People" hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
