'Turn Off the Fire and Reduce Paper' Samsung Biologics Takes Steps to Practice ESG

Samsung Biologics announced on the 22nd that it has launched the '2024 ESG Campaign' for its employees, which can be practiced in daily life. This campaign, first initiated in 2022, was established to create an environment where employees voluntarily and practically participate in reducing carbon emissions.

This year, Samsung Biologics proposed four activities that can be practiced in everyday life: ▲turning off lights ▲saving paper ▲using stairs ▲using tumblers.

First, regarding turning off lights to reduce power consumption, during the one-hour lunch break, lights will be turned off in all offices except for those of shift workers for 30 minutes. The automatic light-off system, which began to be applied last month at Plant 2, will be expanded and implemented in all plants going forward. It is expected that this will save approximately 35.4 MWh (megawatt-hours) of electricity annually. This amount of power is equivalent to fully charging about 2.5 million mobile phones per year.

Additionally, paper saving is encouraged by reducing unnecessary printouts during meetings and sharing materials via PC screens, and stair use is promoted to save energy. To reduce the use of disposable cups, the use of tumblers is encouraged, and employees who use tumblers are offered beverage discounts at the company cafe.

This year, Samsung Biologics aims to reduce its annual direct greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. By 2030, it plans to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by 32%. To achieve this, Samsung Biologics will strengthen its employee ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) campaigns and make efforts such as switching to renewable energy.

They are also making multifaceted efforts such as expanding participation in global initiatives to strengthen ESG management and managing supply chains. Samsung Biologics declared its goal to achieve '2050 Net Zero' in 2022 and is leading global sustainable management by, for example, chairing the supply chain sector of the 'Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI),' a global climate change response organization led by the British Royal Family.

In July last year, together with six global pharmaceutical companies including GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), AstraZeneca, and Merck, Samsung Biologics issued a joint open letter on climate change response, urging suppliers to actively participate in climate change efforts. In November, they held a 'Supply Chain ESG Day' for 26 major suppliers such as Merck, Syngenta, and Thermo Fisher to enhance suppliers' understanding of ESG management and further encourage ESG practices.
