Magnitude 3.9 Earthquake in Tsushima Sea... Reports of 'Shaking' in Gyeongnam, Busan, and More

Epicenter located about 50 km straight-line distance from Busan
Both Busan and Gyeongnam confirmed to have no damage

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 occurred around 11:27:54 PM on the 19th in the sea area 96 km north-northeast of Tsushima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.

The epicenter was located at 35.01 degrees north latitude and 129.64 degrees east longitude, approximately 50 km in a straight line from Busan. The depth of the hypocenter was estimated to be about 19 km.


The Korea Meteorological Administration initially estimated the earthquake magnitude as 4.0 by automatically analyzing the faster P-waves among the seismic waves, but later adjusted the magnitude to 3.9 after manual analysis.


The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the earthquake magnitude as 4.1 and the hypocenter depth as 10 km.


Due to this earthquake, shaking was felt in areas such as Gyeongnam and Busan. According to the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters on the 20th, about 40 earthquake-related reports were received for approximately 10 minutes starting around 11:28 PM the previous day. Most of the reports mentioned "windows shaking."


According to the Gyeongnam Fire Headquarters and Changwon Fire Headquarters, 14 reports were received in Gyeongnam as well (6 in Changwon, 4 in Gimhae, 2 in Miryang, and 1 each in Tongyeong and Jinju).


There were no reports of damage in either Busan or Gyeongnam.
