President Yoon Mentions Impeachment
Six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, pressured the ruling party for the prompt passage of the Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act (Special Prosecutor Act on the Alleged External Pressure in the Death Case of Marine Corps Member Chaesangbyeong).
On the 19th, the Democratic Party, Green Justice Party, New Future Party, Reform New Party, Progressive Party, and Homeland Innovation Party held a joint press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office together with a Marine Corps reserve regiment to announce this. Earlier, the Democratic Party had announced its plan to pass the Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act at the plenary session on the 2nd of next month. The bill was designated as a fast-track agenda for swift processing in the plenary session through cooperation among opposition parties and was automatically submitted to the plenary session on the 3rd.
Park Jumin, the Democratic Party’s senior deputy floor leader, said, "We will definitely pass the Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act in early May," adding, "If the People Power Party continues to oppose it, they will face stronger public backlash, and we will make every effort to expedite the bill’s passage."
Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform New Party, urged, "I ask the People Power Party to understand that the reason they were judged in the election was due to the lack of voices in unfair situations," and added, "Please make the right decision once in the final stages of the 21st National Assembly."
Kim Jongmin, co-leader of the New Future Party, said, "If President Yoon Seok-yeol rejects public opinion and exercises his veto again, the Chaesangbyeong special prosecutor will become the Yoon Seok-yeol special prosecutor," warning strongly, "He must comply with public sentiment."
Warnings of impeachment against President Yoon were also issued. Kang Seonghee, a lawmaker from the Progressive Party, said, "If the special prosecutor act passes the National Assembly but is nullified again by President Yoon’s veto, it will directly go against the public sentiment expressed in the general election, and it will be time for the people to open the 'door of impeachment' they have talked about," adding, "The Progressive Party will observe how President Yoon accepts the special prosecutor and then organize its stance on impeachment." Cho Guk, leader of the Homeland Innovation Party, said, "If President Yoon Seok-yeol vetoes the special prosecutor act related to a case in which he and officials in the presidential office are highly suspected, it is not a matter of progressive or conservative, left or right, but the people will reject the president."
