Surging Demand for 'Suyuk Run' Offering Boiled Pork and Makgeolli for 10,000 Won

Geumcheon-gu Hosted Health Running Event Known as 'Suyuk Run'
Hundreds of Participants Requesting Refunds Before Registration Payment

The "Geumcheon-gu Office Chief's Cup Health Running Competition," popularly known as the "Suyuk Run," has been a hot topic online for days. Word has spread that by paying a participation fee of 10,000 won, participants can enjoy suyuk (boiled pork slices), Makgeolli, and dubu kimchi regardless of whether they complete the race. Although official registration has not yet opened, the Geumcheon-gu Athletics Federation website was temporarily inaccessible due to the influx of people hoping to participate.

The much-talked-about marathon is hosted by Geumcheon-gu in Seoul and organized by the Geumcheon-gu Athletics Federation. Now in its 20th year, the event will be held on May 26. Participants can choose between 5 km or 10 km courses, with registration starting on the 23rd of this month.

The reason this event has gained attention is because of the suyuk and Makgeolli. Although the participation fee is only 10,000 won, it is well known among running enthusiasts that all participants are generously provided with suyuk, dubu kimchi, and Makgeolli, earning the event the nickname "Suyuk Run."

It is said that the event has been offering suyuk since around 2015. In line with the event’s philosophy of not obsessing over finishing or records, medals and timing chips are not provided, but food such as suyuk is served even if participants do not complete the race.

Many photos have been posted online showing participants running and enjoying suyuk and Makgeolli. There are also reviews such as, "If you run 10 km, there’s no suyuk left. To eat suyuk, you have to run the 5 km course," and "Usually, 10 km is the main event in other races, but here, the 5 km is the main event because people run quickly to eat suyuk."

As this became known, on the 17th, many people wanting to participate flooded the Geumcheon-gu Athletics Federation website, causing it to be blocked.

Additionally, before registration officially began, hundreds of people sent their participation fees to the bank account number listed in the notice, causing a commotion. The federation posted a notice on the website stating, "Applications and payments made before the registration period are invalid," and "Participation fees are being refunded." The federation also announced that, for safety reasons, the number of participants will be limited to 950.

Netizens expressed their determination to join the first-come, first-served ticketing on the 23rd through various online communities and social media, leaving comments such as "People to run with, or rather eat with," and "It’s a great event that promotes the region and fosters goodwill."
